You’ve probably heard the saying, “It’s not your children who come to your aid in old age, but rather your muscles.”
Engaging in daily exercise and walking is highly effective in preventing muscle atrophy and maintaining bone health. Specialized gyms that focus on exercises for seniors are also very beneficial and help prevent common sports injuries at this age. Light and appropriate physical exercises contribute to overall muscle strength, especially in the legs, which is crucial for getting up from chairs and beds.
In cases where an individual cannot perform exercises independently, seeking the assistance of a specialist who can guide them through proper techniques is essential. During such times, physiotherapists or occupational therapists play a crucial role.
As we age, physical activity becomes even more crucial for maintaining health and independence. Here are some key insights:
Tailored Exercise Programs: Seniors benefit from personalized exercise routines that consider their unique needs. These programs should focus on improving strength, balance, and flexibility. Encourage seniors to consult with a fitness professional or physical therapist to design a plan that suits their abilities and goals.
Walking: Walking remains one of the simplest yet most effective exercises for seniors. It enhances cardiovascular health, strengthens leg muscles, and provides an opportunity for social interaction. Even short walks around the neighborhood contribute significantly to overall well-being.
Resistance Training: Incorporating light resistance exercises (using bands or weights) helps maintain muscle mass and bone density. These exercises can be done at home or in specialized gyms for seniors.
Fall Prevention: Balance exercises are essential for preventing falls, which can have serious consequences for older adults. Simple activities like standing on one leg or practicing tai chi can improve stability.
Guidance from Professionals: Physiotherapists and occupational therapists play a vital role in helping seniors maintain mobility. Whether recovering from an injury or managing chronic conditions, their expertise ensures safe and effective exercise techniques.
Bedridden Seniors: For those spending extended periods in bed, regular movement is crucial. Gentle stretches, range-of-motion exercises, and changing positions help prevent bedsores and stiffness.
Respiratory Health: Seniors should engage in breathing exercises to maintain lung function. Deep breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, and pursed-lip breathing enhance respiratory capacity.
My experience with my mother: I recall a time when my mother used to walk for an hour daily. However, in her ninth decade of life, she suffered a severe fracture of her hip and pelvis due to a car accident. After four months of physiotherapy, she was able to walk again, and she continued walking for another ten years. Later, when she experienced a stroke and lost sensation in half of her body, Mr. Askari, a skilled and knowledgeable physiotherapist, helped her regain mobility using a walker. During this period, she had also lost her ability to swallow and speak, but specialized speech therapists like Mr. Salmani assisted her in recovering these functions through targeted exercises.
In the subsequent years, as my mother’s mobility decreased, and she spent more time in bed, exercises were crucial to prevent bedsores and muscle stiffness. When her lung function became compromised, specific respiratory physiotherapy exercises provided further assistance. Notably, the prescribed exercises were diligently repeated every day under the caring guidance of our compassionate nurse."
